Honorable Mention: Morphesia Mystifies With ‘I Forever End’

I know I know we still can’t believe this morsel slipped our greasy buttered fingers but here we are! Local black metal treasure and First Impressions alumni Morphesia has risen with his second full length album I Forever End which was released on Oct.24 via Sliptrick Records. For those that are fashionably late to this black metal ball, Morphesia’s sophomore release is his first album as a signed musician! So without further ado, let’s dive in shall we?

We had the pleasure of checking out Morphesia’s three track demo earlier this year and discussed the songs “Within,” “Forever,” and “The Moon,” so you can read about that here. “Towards The Sea” is foaming with great riffs that will take you to any depth before submerging you deeper with the soothingly ominous “Underneath,” you just wait till you reach the bottom of this track. Morphesia’s ultimate overlord, Zombie Thirteen, continues to be the master of anticipation by slowly setting up the stage for his growls to take over which can best be heard in “Shadows.”

“End,” on the other hand, greets listeners to a mellow and beautiful instrumental piece composed solely in piano and exemplifies its title. The bonus track “At Last” gives you something to remember and will unleash its dormant fury on you while it drips with black metal goop. Morphesia has brought an album that is far more relaxed and open to new possibilities but still stays trve to his roots. Witchery’s ‘Legion’ Is Unstoppable

Oh yes you are reading this correctly, only this time around, yours truly will talk about these black metallers and not the smelly Klown. BUT you can see what the Klown thought about their previous stuff here. Witchery is back with a new infernal soundtrack titled I Am Legion which was released via Century Media Records and are here to show their strength in numbers.

You feel the impending doom brewing in the cold, dark wasteland ala GoT in “True North” and “Welcome, Night,” the white walkers will approve and they’ll probably adopt these songs. “Seraphic Terror” and “Dry Bones” picks up the pace and fuels their grimness at the same time and will have you raising dem horns. The uber awesome “A Faustian Deal” will not only become a favorite for Satyricon lovers (like moi ;D ) but they will make you want to strike an unholy deal with this song especially with the intro drum tempos.

This album has more magick in its midst and doesn’t lose the fierce attitude their previous albums have conveyed. I Am Legion lurks in the dark recesses of the forest and will pop up to surround you before you willingly give in. Get your copy here and beware because this album will conjure up many horns.

Blaze the Thunder Light Up The Skies With Their Debut

Blaze The Thunder have their hearts set to ignite your ears and horns with their debut LP Tonight the Revenge Starts which was released independently. The trio from LA start off with “Through the Night” and “Nightmare” which are both ready to get your blood pumping and are great tracks to get this Revenge started. Something worth noting about “Nightmare,” is that it’s packed with the ruthless riffs and an awesome breakdown from Roberto de la Rosa which even caught the attention of the J-Ohster’s non metal head minion/cousin’s ear while she lounged in the Ugh Metal Fortress.

Blaze The Thunder continues their electric streak with the sneaky “A Vulture” which is coming for ya whether you’re ready or not. “Deceiver” has a great little build up with a slightly calmer tempo which is great because you can absorb the trio’s musicianship. “Razor” cuts slowly and beautifully with their acoustic intro which snowballs and transitions to the heavy metal goodness.

When Roberto de la Rosa’s riffs aren’t captivating you it’s his vocals which work so great with their brand of American heavy metal. When De La Rosa isn’t charming you, then its drummer Matt Oloffson and bassist Weedz who will take you higher giving you a fun marygeejuahana trip. That’s what happens when you inject marygeejuahana right? Blaze The Thunder produced a strong debut and I have a feeling they will not dissipate once they strike your ears. Amberian Dawn Shine In The ‘Darkness’

Amberian Dawn shine their power metal light in Darkness of Eternity via Napalm Records. The Finnish quintet is gathering all sorts of magick to charm the casual metalhead since they are well aware we are entering power metal season! JK! Every season is power metal season! Will it work though? Let’s see…

The track “Sky Is Falling” is contagious with its upbeat rhythm which is quite a 180 from the previous cinematic track “I’m The One.” The hit “Dragonflies” dims the lights and teases your imagination with the dramaticism with its instrumentals whereas the empowering break up song “Maybe” will touch your tummy heart, body, and soul, and remind you that you’re awesome and that person you wasted your time and effort sucks ass! But enough about the story of my nonexistent love life. 😉 “Luna My Darling” will entice you to stay on this magic carpet ride and feel the stars and far, far away from my sad sack stories. I really appreciate the lower notes Capri Virkkunen hits.

If you are missing your dose of a classical song Amberian Dawn do so well don’t fret they throw in “Symphony Nr.1, part 2- Darkness Of Eternity.” Though symphonic metal is not the J-Ohster’s cup of Joe, this was a very nice album where any open minded metalhead can appreciate. Virkkunen continues to shine with her spot on vocals which can make a rock feel and her voice compliments any style this band chooses. Ugh Metal Presents: The Best Albums of 2016

WARNING: Some of the following albums did not have the pleasure to be reviewed by us, but they were certainly doted on.

We have finally crossed the finish line in to 2017! 2016 will go down in history and infamy (depending on how you see it) but not all was bleak and surreal because the devil sent us a lot of fine albums down our chimney… Here’s our top 5 best albums.

5. Death Angel- The Evil Divide AND Testament- Brotherhood of The Snake

Bare with the Klown a bit, he had a tough time truly pinpointing what the best was. After all, yours truly is the primary judge of the album reviews for Ugh Metal. But the number five spot kicks off with the underrated Bay Area Thrash legends, Testament. This album has been out for a month and immediately had the Klown blasting this mother a little too much. It was great and it proved that Chuck Billy and Alex Skolnick have no plans of slowing down.

Death Angel, on the other hand, had this permanent two legged New Year’s party really high. The Klown loves Death Angel and for some reason still remain underrated, the best thing about this album was the fact that Death Angel explored something they’re not entirely known for. What the Klown speaks of is speed, nothing wrong with Death Angel’s usual M.O. but this time they really wanted everyone to know of their return with a vengeance. This album was angry but therapeutic.

4. Nails- You Will Never Be One Of Us

What can the Klown say? This album was an adrenaline junkies’ dream! From beginning to end it was pure testosterone and mayhem… and it was fucking awesome. This album was highly anticipated before its release and it delivered! 1000%! Todd Jones showed the world that whether the tracks are seconds long or up to 8-plus minutes, the results are all about quality not so much quantity. But most importantly, when “You Will Never Be One Of Us” was set as the first single, you knew you were in for a treat and know that Nails were beginning to set the bar high!

3. Avatar- Feathers And Flesh

Before you judge, this judge, the Klown is well aware that he didn’t give a verdict to this album. To be fair, Ugh Metal wasn’t born yet at the time of this release. With that said, allow the Klown to tell you peeps that he loved this album. My clown-like mentor, Johannes Eckerström, did a great job showing off his mastery of his vocals and eccentricity to us Americans! When the Klown first heard “The Eagle Has Landed” he was entranced and wondered who they were when his YouTube Music randomly played it… then of course, the radio soon followed. Unfortunately, Avatar have been given the Rammstein treatment here in our humble abode. “Du Hast” isn’t the only song Rammstein has, just like Avatar has more songs to offer than “The Eagle…” Rock 105.3! So when yours truly invested on the album, he was blown away!

2. Fleshgod Apocalypse- King AND Vader- The Empire

Alright… the Klown won’t invest too much time on Vader. Don’t get the Klown wrong, he loved the album but not enough to take the number one spot. That’s due to the fact that it’s been out for a little over a month! Still, he loved the shit out of this highly anticipated album! It definitely made him believe that Welcome to the Morbid Reich had found an equal. But most importantly, he also rated this album.

With that said, the Klown will talk about another album of the pre-Ugh-Metal existence, Fleshgod Apocalypse’s King. Since he heard about the album’s development last year, he was stoked and giddy like a children’s party clown! Of course, when “The Fool” came out, the Klown knew that he was going to be in for a treat of epic proportions. It was incredibly imminent once their intro track “Marche Royale” began and finished. This Italian powerhouse, proving that you can take the Italians out of Italy but not the Italy from the Italians, give you class without having to sacrifice your headbanging, moshing and horn-raising tendencies. Fleshgod Apocalypse brought some elegance with their Soprano opera singing beauty, Veronica Bordacchini, and gave her and their pianist, Francesco Ferrini, a platform on their seventh track “Paramour (Die Leidenschaft Bringt Leiden).”

Vader: Angels of Steel, Genocidius, The Army-geddon, Feel My Pain, Parabellum

Vader and Fleshgod Apocalypse were two powerful empires that reigned together.

1. Abbath (Self Titled Album) AND Dark Funeral- Where Shadows Forever Reign

Just like the previous, the Klown will not invest too much time on Dark Funeral because its an album he rated. Since his verdict, the Klown hasn’t really stopped playing this dark masterpiece. Just to give you peeps an idea, the Klown unchained his ears and speaker volume, when he heard “Unchain My Soul.”

On that note, allow the Klown to place the shared crown on this black metal legend’s head. Abbath released his self titled debut album on a pre-Ugh-Metal album era, which was January and since then, I haven’t stopped playing it. Thankfully, one of the masters of Bergen, Norway released this masterpiece in 2016 and gave us a much needed touch of epicness for what already began to look like a gloomy year. Abbath gave us some Immortal and the short lived supergroup I, followed by some more original material. Most importantly, he unleashed his inner Rob Halford and gave it a touch of kvlt. Just to conclude this coronation, whether or not you are “kvlt” this album spoke volumes and demonstrated why Abbath is a legendary king, even if his departure from Immortal wasn’t.

*Chuggo’s Note: A mea culpa is in order for the underrated and legendary Rotting Christ. Before the list was finalized, he thought Rotting Christ’s Ritual was a 2015 release. Boy… does the Klown need a new hobby; it should have been a top 5, because he loved that album! Nevertheless, they deserve a mention because it was a superb album and shows that these Greeks’ gifts need no precaution!

5. Lordi- Monsteroephonic (Theaterror vs. Demonarchy)

Regardless of how you feel about bands that have a specific gimmick, you will love these guys if you enjoy a good dose of keyboards with a dash of some old school heavy metal… but not too old school! In Monsterophonic these Finnish monsters return back to the nostalgia along with their recurring theme of b-horror movies making it a scary, good ride!

Favorite Song(s): Hug You Hardcore, The Night The Monsters Died, Mary Is Dead, Let’s Go Slaughter He-Man.

4. Avatar- Feathers and Flesh

These guys have been quietly bubbling beneath the surface and have finally made their grand entrance in to American airwaves (I’m looking at you “The Eagle Has Landed”). These Swedes have been at it for almost 16 years and grabbed everyone’s attention with Feathers and Flesh because it’s as eccentric and entertaining like their vocalist Johannes Eckerström. Avatar adds a much needed lightheartedness and fun in to metal and fearlessly play with different musical styles in this album.

3. Abbath (Self Titled Album)

ABBAAAAAAATH! He blew me away much like the rabid arctic winds with his debut self titled album. The moment you hear the distinct and orgasmic riffs of “To War” followed by “Winter Bane” you know its game over. Whatever your feelings are about Abbath’s new solo endeavors, you gotta give credit to where credit is due. Abbath is seething with raw pent up energy and oozes kvlt. It was an exciting and mind blowing start for this Norwegian Black Metal legend and let me just say, I can’t wait to see what Mr.Abbath will craft next.

Favorite Song(s): Winter Bane, Ashes Of The Damned, Nebular Ravens Winter.

2. Pain- Coming Home

This album had the ability to take you on a journey of debauchery and growth. Coming Home had all the good stuff we can all relate to and tapped in to the most common and primal desires. For those that have explored the world and have gone through hell and heaven and back, “Coming Home” will tug at your heart strings and voices that yearning we all have to return to where we came from. Mastermind and vocalist, Peter Tägtgren, has been a very busy man and after five years, he still managed to create an album that will slowly creep into your brain and voice your most basic wants. It was a fun, dirty and wide-eyed little album with a heart of gold. Peter Tägtgren is bae!

1. Rotting Christ- Rituals

 There’s so many things to say about this particular album and not enough syllables, intonations and words in the English language to express my feelings about Rituals. This is why I will state it in Greek. Jk! I’m not that talented or cultured but I will say this, listening to this album felt otherworldly and casted some serious magic. These Greek extreme metal vets have been creating dark, theatrical and heavily underrated masterpieces for 30 years and have yet to get the praise they deserve. Rituals will change your life and will make you dust off your ceremonial robe or prepare for battle!

Favorite Song(s): In Nomine Dei Nostri, The Four Horsemen, Konx Om Pax.

The Trials of November 25

A note from the Klown: My fellow Americans, Happy National Fatfuck Day aka Thanksgiving. For the shopaholics, happy Black Friday! Without you the Klown wouldn’t enjoy the most brutal moshpits he has ever seen. The Klown still wishes to see it happen in real time with metal blasting through the speakers through those crowded aisles but he’ll digress. On that note, that same Friday was also record store day. With that said on to business!

Oni’s Debut Is Indestructible

Oni is the hottest commodity to grace the metal scene since Megadeth released their own beer. The sextet from the Cayman Island (not to be confused with the Icelandic trio) capitalizes their ever growing popularity with their debut album Ironshore. Although the band claims to be Prog metal, after the Klown finally surfaced from the Ironshore one thing was clear, if the Klown listened to this type of “Prog” mosh pits would be commonplace in these generally mellow shows. Nevertheless, don’t get the Klown wrong he still liked what he heard and now understands why the steam they gained became white hot! The tracks “The Science” and “Spawn and Feed” give a dose of that Prog sound Oni claims to be. However, Meshuggah-like influences could be heard from these guys through the tracks “The Only Cure” and “Kanvas.” The rest of the album is a mix of different influences that the band shows off such as “Chasing Ecstasy,” which gave the Klown a glimpse if Nekrogoblikon did metalcore while other tracks contain more groove metal.

Martyrdöd have completed their ‘List’ before the year’s end

The Swedish crustcore band is back with their seventh studio titled List and this album was anything but crusty. List was borderline grind blended with some early Norwegian Black Metal sounds. Tracks such as “Wipeout” and “Harmageddon” definitely had the signature punk sounds that originated from the crust subgenre, others such as “List” nearly made the Klown think  he was listening to the opening track to a lost track of Bathory or Rotting Christ. “Handlost Fallen Angel” and “Intervention” definitely had the reminiscent sounds of Darkthrone making this album feel more like an unholy time capsule.

Witchery Spawns Its Sixth And Sinful Album

The Swedish quintet of blackened thrash/speed metal is back and has delivered a service befitting to that of anyone donning the stereotype of the metal head. In His Infernal Majesty’s Service is Witchery’s sixth installment so wicked, even the staunch would line up to join the service. Hell, our own pug from hell especially loved the opening track, “Lavey-athan.” (Poor bastard thought it was about him… don’t correct him if you see him.) The Klown’s personal favorite is “Netherworld Emperor,” but “Nosferatu” and “Burning of Salem” tracks can become fan favorites because it resembles a thrashy version of Watain or a new coming of Bathory. “In Warm Blood” and “Escape from Dunwich Valley” fashions itself as a serious version of Ghoul. This was fucking awesome and well done!

GWAR Conquer With ‘Black Friday’

C’mon… does the Klown really need to introduce the Scumdogs from Planet Home? But if he must, GWAR has graced us again with a four track EP vinyl titled Black Friday. This album will bring joy to all the loyal scumdogs, and for the sentimental bunch, a bloody tear to their eye. The reason for that bloody tear is that this is technically Eddie “Oderus Urungus” Brockie’s final album. Although, originally filmed and covered on The AV Club’s Youtube channel years ago, this album is still a treat. Side A comprises of Brockie’s famous vocals and his cover on Billy Ocean’s hit, “Get Out of My Dreams” and The Who’s “Baba O’Riley.” On Side B, current front man Michael “Blothar” Bishop takes over and perform a revamped version of Pet Shop Boys’ “West End Girls,” which they rename “West End Ghouls.” Much like Side A, Gwar transition in to their version of The Jim Carroll Band’s “People Who Died.” This album was awesome and a real treat and not just because it was Brockie’s final recording but because it was showcases GWAR’s ability to reinvent themselves and the songs they slaughter.
