Honorable Mention

Rotting Christ Tease Congregation with The Call

It has been a while since Rotting Christ has been mentioned in this site. Come to think of it, the Klown’s sibling named their album, Rituals, the best album in 2016. If you don’t believe that, you can check that clusterfuck out and see for yourself. Anyway, the Greek titans have returned with a bit of noise this year in the form of a tease. Their current EP, The Call, has come out through Peaceville Records on vinyl. Y’know the label most famous for carrying Darkthrone records since they signed them?

So why has the Klown put this release on an honorable mention? The answer is that their current release only contains one original song and a live version of an already established song. The original which happens to be titled “The Call” sounded awesome. The song had sounds similar to that of the previous album, Rituals, from guitar and vocalization from Sakis Tolis to the awesome bass work and drumming from Vagelis Karzis and Themis Tolis, respectively. The track also has a slow but awesome guitar solo.

The final song comes from their 1993 release, The Mighty Contract, “The Sign of Evil Existence.” The cool thing about this live version is that it contains two very prolific singers lending their voices. Those voices are Varathron’s Stefan Necroabyssious and Behemoth’s Adam “Nergal” Darski. Other than that, nothing truly stands out as much. All the Klown can say is that he can’t wait until March for the new one! If you fancy yourself a true Rotting Christ fan or just want to add one more to your vinyl collection, you can get that baby here.

Issuing The Call for the Heretics

Visigoth Return with its Second Conquest

Quickly! Without thinking, name a metal from Utah that’s not Chelsea Grin. If the answer was Visigoth, congrats you read the subheader. The Salt Lake quintet have comeback with its sophomore album Conqueror’s Oath through Metal Blade Records. This tribe still manage to bring back the power to their style of metal.

The album begins with “Steel and Silver” which opened with a killer solo and which are then accompanied by frontman’s, Jake Rogers, baritone vocals. Rogers’s vocals would then be accompanied by a manly chorus making it sound epic. “Warrior Queen” features the collective performing a throwback to the classic heavy metal sounds like that of classic Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. They pick up the pace altogether with “Outlive Them All” and feature power metal sounds similar to Blind Guardian but faster.

“Hammerforged” featured more of the classic heavy metal sounds and includes the rest of the band accompanying Rogers with a melodic and very masculine chorus. “Traitor’s Gate” starts off rather slow for a little over a minute and immediately pick up. “Blades in the Night” features some real speed and will get your blood flowing. The album caps off with “The Conqueror’s Oath” which made for a pretty good closer and finished how it began.

The Klown enjoyed the album. It had the collective really show off and highlight a throwback with a touch of modern power metal influences. If you haven’t heard of Visigoth before, then the Klown would recommend it for those who love the sounds of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal as well as power metal. Lastly, you can check it out in Bandcamp to judge for yourself and acquire.

Therion Release its Unholiest Contemporary to Date

Therion is the one band name that gets tossed around when the topic of symphonic death metal gets mentioned. The Swedish collective has been going strong for 30 years already and has no signs of stopping soon. But Klown, how can you be sure of that? Asked none of you. Well, if you didn’t read the title, they got a new one out titled Beloved Antichrist through Nuclear Blast Records.

Before the Klown continues on about this album he will say that he won’t attempt to talk about this latest release too much. Why? You actually may be wondering, this time? This current compilation is not only 3 discs but it is also 3 hours’ worth of music and 46 tracks long. That’s quite a doozy, am I right lads and lassies? This recent release also happens to be a rock opera. Therion’s concept and inspiration take a different turn than most metal albums because it is inspired by the Russian philosopher Vladimir Solovyov’s Tale of the Antichrist.

For those who’ve never read or heard of this tale, you’re either not very pious or haven’t dabbled in to philosophy in your scholarly career yet. The short summary that the Klown will give you is that the story is about unity among a common enemy/oppressor despite creed and regions. This album also features an array of guest musicians portraying characters from the narrative. Musicians like Chrysalys’s Chiara Malvestiti takes the role of Johanna, Erik Rosenius as Satan, Samuel Jarrick as Pope Peter II, Plague Of Stars’ Melissa Ferlaak and The Experiment No. Q’s Linnéa Vikström as a congresswoman.

The Klown will say this about this 3-disc compilation: the album was beautifully composed. The instrumental behind the album set the tone well and make you feel the moment. The vocals, unless you are not a fan of opera-style singing, felt right, well placed and didn’t feel too exaggerated or over the top. The choir featured on the album did a great job setting a tone and accompanying the stand-alone vocals from the characters when needed.  If you’re attention span isn’t longer than you’d want it to be or don’t appreciate operas, then the Klown wouldn’t recommend this for you. Lastly, you can check this piece out on Spotify or take the plunge here.

Harm’s Way Latest Show What Chicago Hardcore is All About

The Chi-Town quintet known as Harm’s Way has returned after a three-year hiatus. The Klown has had the pleasure of seeing this quintet perform a while back. In fact, admittedly, the Klown thought that frontman James Pligge was John Cena’s tattooed doppelgänger but that may be a story for another time. The point is the Klown can vouch for these guy’s brand of hardcore. The group’s latest album is Posthuman and it was released through Metal Blade Records.

This inhuman album starts with “Human Carrying Capacity” strongly. The heavy guitar opening makes this track sound powerful but once Pligge lets out his vocals, you know the band ain’t messing around. Lest the Klown forget the complimentary bass and drumming from Chris Mills. They follow up the same way but with more drumming power with “Last Man,” “Sink” and “Unreality.” “Temptation” was an intermission type of song which started out slow and with droning, wailing guitars and Pligge’s faded, vibrating vocals.

“Becoming the Machine” and “Dissect Me” not only picks up speed but also gives you some aggressive hardcore punk that will cause you to break out a circle pit of your own. “The Gift” has the group venturing into a some industrial which was rather unexpected but good. The album finishes how it began, with “Dead Space” but with extra vocals in the mix to really drive it home. The Klown has seen some hype on this band’s latest release and after hearing it, he can say that the hype was met. If you want to check this album out before you buy it, check it out in Metal Blade’s Bandcamp to further convince yourself.

Pissed Regardless Make One For The Birds

Oh… snap, look who’s making a return to your favorite site [citation needed]. For local San Diegans who dabble in the local scene Pissed Regardless is a very familiar name when it comes to hardcore. In fact, as the Klown mentioned before this isn’t Pissed Regardless’s first Ugh Metal appearance, check that shiz out whenever you can. Anyway, if you’ve had the pleasure to check this quintet out, good news they have released a new EP titled Feed The Birds with Creator-Destructor Records.

The album begins with “Empty” which starts off with some slow, heavy riffed guitars and immediately picks up the pace with Tim’s drumming and Matt Gerken’s harsh vocals. They continue their hardcore fest with “Feed The Birds” and “Lipstick on a Pig” and really have a steady, fast, and heavy pace with Tim. The group features a hardcore anthem “No Reprieve” which feature some speed, Gerken spewing some powerful vocals that had a pretty good flow to it, and a chorus that accompanies Gerkin’s vocals adding significance to the song.

The EP finished the feast with a good advice against the impending zombie apocalypse, “Trust No Pulse.” That track ended much rougher and with a heavy hardcore overtone. The Klown had the pleasure of seeing this group perform the day of the release and here these tracks live. If you haven’t quite dived in, the Klown would recommend this album for fans of Evergreen Terrace, Hatebreed, US Bastards and Norma Jean. Lastly, if you need a nudge check it out in the label’s Bandcamp and get in the same place.

Honorable Mention

Tribulation Come Back from Down Below

The Klown swears that we’re trying to get our shit together as best as we can. However, it’s hard to with last weeks pick since Ugh Metal has a crippling independent release and band fetish. This little number slipped from the overwhelming excitement. But now the Klown shall speak of this brand-new installment from Sweden’s own Tribulation. On that note, the quartet released their third installment Down Below via Century Media Records on January 26.

The contemporary begins with “The Lament” which starts off rather slow and picks up right before the minute. The track also contains a pretty awesome but mellow solo. The quartet taps into their prog side with “Nightbound,” “Lady Death” and “Subterranea” just to mention a few. “Purgatorio” is an instrumental intermission which was not only soothing but served as a great intro  to “Cries of the Underworld.” “Cries…” also featured some piano action to go along with their prog, black metal sounds.

“Lacrimosa,” much like the previous track,  features classical strings and finishes with some ambient piano sounds. “The World” goes all out with the prog influence and sounds reminiscent to that of Rush if Geddy Lee decided to sport some growling vocals, intermittently in the song. “Here Be The Dragons” has the song featuring an ensemble of both piano and classical strings and also incorporates the glockenspiel for some added measure.

The album closes with “Come, Become, To Be.”This album was pretty interesting and a good release. The album was well-rounded and featured an array of instruments to complement their sounds. The Klown would recommend this album for fans of Enslaved, Black Anvil and Morphesia. If you’re trve but like to mellow out, this album is definitely recommended. Check this album out on Spotify and get it here.

W.A.S.P. Release their Sweet Sixteen

The name W.A.S.P. should be a familiar one. Especially when Glam comes to mind. The Klown remembers them because of an incident that happened to comedian Brian Posehn in his teenage years while approaching W.A.S.P.’s face Blackie Lawless. The short version of the joke is that he told a teenage Posehn to “grow some tits” when he approached Lawless with admiration. Anyway, the band famous for “Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)” has released a new one for its expanding discography titled ReIdolized (The Soundtrack to the Crimson Idol) via Napalm Records.

The album begins with “The Titanic Overture” which was rather tender and Lawless sports soft clean vocals. The album then picks up the pace with “The Invisible Boy.” “Chainsaw Charlie (Murders In The New Morgue)” was melodic and emphasizes a throwback sound and concept. “The Gypsy Meets the Boy” is one for the ladies and the softies which, as you may have guessed, was a ballad with a bit of oomph.

Lawless gives us heartfelt power ballads such as “Hold On To My Heart,”  “The Peace,” and “Miss You” which had an introductory track titled “Michael’s Song.” W.A.S.P picks up the pace and shows off some power metal influence with “Doctor Rockter” like that of Grave Digger. “I Am One” has the collective sporting sounds that simulate a live concert in case you ever wondered how they sound live, and features a soundbite of two British males speaking in cockney.

The album finishes with the longest track of the album “The Great Misconception of Me” which was another power ballad. This album was rather sentimental and very mature. This album is for the fans of W.A.S.P. and peeps that are really into ballads. If you fancy yourself a fan, you can check it out on Spotify or go to the label’s Bandcamp.

Genocide Pact Release a New Order

Can you name another band that came from Washington D.C. that’s not Darkest Hour? If you name anything but Genocide Pact then you are more knowledgeable than the Klown in that regard. The trio known as Genocide Pact have now released their sophomore album Order of Torment through Relapse Records. Unlike Darkest Hour, this trio takes a step further and give you a full dose of death metal.

The contemporary begins strongly with “Conquered and Disposed” with some brutal and heavy riffs, and growls from Tim Mullaney. Bassist Michael Nolan and drummer Connor Donegan compliment this track with their respective heavy but groovy bass riffs and fast-paced drumming. The song would immediately transition smoothly to “Decimation Grid” and “Spawn of Suffering” which contained a lot of hardcore influences accompanying the trio’s brand of death metal.

“Pain Reprisal” was much like the previous tracks but melodic by comparison and had a long but awesome solo which closed the song perfectly. “Ascendancy Absolved” continues Mullaney’s mastery of the ax from beginning to end. The album concludes with “Blood Rejection” which ended the way it began but somewhat slower. There’s not much else that the Klown can say about this album other than it was pretty good to listen to, and definitely worth your ears if you fancy yourself a huge death metal fan. Check it out the in the band’s Bandcamp for further convincing.

Adding More Death to Death Metal

Bomber Release their Explosive Debut

The Klown has done it again… this time. He has fulfilled the salacious kink of Ugh Metal in the form of an independent act. Of course, the Klown is happy to briefly fill you in on this group. Hailing from the land of Brie cheese, baguettes, and wine is the quartet that is known as Bomber. Although the band was found in 2013,  they are picking up steam with their thrash metal/crossover, and as we all know the journey to the first album isn’t usually immediate. With that said, the French quartet has now released their first album titled Sommation.

The inaugural record starts off slow but then becomes explosive with “Bombarded.” At first, the skinsman Romain Ircio opens the track with some slow drumming and cymbals clashing accompanied by intermittent guitar riffs in the first minute. After the first minute, the band lets loose some good ol’ fashioned thrash metal reminiscent to that of the Bay Area variety. The track features a great solo with Jürgen Wattiez showing off some vocals that closely resemble James Hetfield (as if the Klown needs to say where he’s from).

They continue their bombardment with “Damn Negative” and adds some speed into the mix. “Demolition” and “League for Cancer” would feature Hugo Belval’s deluxe bass play as a solo. The collective really picks up the pace with some speed thrash metal once “Pride of the Burglars” begins which is filled with awesome drumming, great riffs, and some killer solos.

The album finishes with “Assembled to Thrash” which continues this band’s thrash masterpiece. As you can tell the Klown enjoyed this album very much and was surprised. Lend these guys your ears especially if you fancy yourself a fan of thrash like the legendary Metallica, Testament, Slayer and Stormtroopers Of Death. Check it out on Bomber’s Bandcamp if you need a proper nudge.

Saxon Surges with A New Album

The name doesn’t need an introduction at all. Seriously, the band is an underrated legend when it comes to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Nevertheless, the quintet known as Saxon have returned and have awarded the masses with a new one. After all, that is what legends do am I right lads and lassies? The contemporary is titled Thunderbolt and was released through Silver Lining Records.

The latest starts rather epically with the introductory track “Olympus Rising” and then transitions to “Thunderbolt.” The latter brings back the sounds of NWOBHM in full force and reminds you why Saxon is legendary. “The Secret of the Flight” was one of the Klown’s favorites in this album. The song was fast paced and featured guitar solos from both from Paul Quinn and Paul Scarratt.

The band gets epic and shows off some power metal inspiration and gothic undertones with “Nosferatu (The Vampire’s Waltz). The Brits continued with more of the power metal style with “They Played Rock and Roll” which sounded like a throwback to that of Helloween. The Klown’s other favorite also happened to feature the Viking king of Amon Amarth known as Johan Hegg. Hegg lends his powerful growling vocals for the track “Predator.” The collective ride the Viking high and pay homage to their heritage with “Sons of Odin” which was a song that was infused with Scorpions style of metal. The track was a perfect anthem that will prepare you for the fruitful afterlife in Valhalla.

Saxon goes in for the kill with the awesome and fast-paced “Sniper.” They one-up the power metal influence with “A Wizard’s Tale” and really go all out with the guitar riffs and solos. Saxon manages to show off some thrash metal similar to that of Overkill and made a really awesome surprise which has dual guitar solos from Quinn and Scarratt, and powerful drumming from Nigel Glockler. The band finishes this electric release with a song for the unsung heroes of our beloved concerts in the form of “Roadie’s Song.”

The bonus round for those who got the vinyl version received a raw version of “Nosferatu.” As you may have figured out by now the Klown really enjoyed this album. In fact, he almost talked about the entire album. If you are a fan of the NWOBHM, power metal or just a fan of Saxon it is a must-have. Lastly, check it out on Spotify or just take the Klown’s word for it and get it here.

Solar Haze Delivers Debut

The 60’s may have had a purple haze but in 2017, we have a red haze and I’m not talking about global warming! I’m talking about something better and awesome like stoner rockers Solar Haze and their debut self titled album which was released independently.

These ultra groovy dudes can ride the desert and make it melt with “Hammer to the Head.” This song will still give you that boost on badassery and confidence even if you have a giant glob of dog dirt on your shoes or if you have a killer wedgie. The free spirited “Hawk in the Wind” will set you free baby and no dust in the wind can stop you ‘cause the world is your oyster with this one!

“Nefarious Natures & Truth Perceived,” “Stoned to Death” and “Coven” collectively ride out of the sunset and into the night by flirting with doom. There are instances where vocalist Stephen Falla resembles Ozzy Osbourne circa Black Sabbath especially in “Neafarious…” This album gives you the best of both worlds by giving you the orange tinted stoner rock and teases you with some light doom, a great way to entice new audiences. Let Solar Haze consume you and snag their debut album in there bandcamp and wait till you feel it *cough* and give ‘em a like to see how their mystery album artwork will look like!

MYSTERY MEN!!

 ‘Metal Bear Stomp’ Is Fierce

That’s right Siberian Meat Grinder is here to rip your face and melt your ears off with their latest and epically titled Metal Bear Stomp via Rise Sound Records. The 90’s people may have slept till they reached Brooklyn but not us man! SMG’s crossover anthem “No Sleep Till Hell” will make us giddy to warm up by the eternal fire in our eternal slumber! *LAUGHS EVILLY*

“Hunt the Steel” will beat the wimp outta us and will be THE song when we’re crushing our enemies. Once sweet victory is ours, you bet “Walking Tall” will play as we walk away from the explosion and we put on our extra dark sunglasses. Vocalist Siberian Vlad sprinkles some light rap in to the mix in “Ruder Than Thou” and “No Way Back.” The rap adds an extra grittiness to these crossover songs along with Vlad’s raspy and thick vocals.

I know you are probably dying to know how the title track sounds like and let me just tell you it’s just as awesome as it sounds. It is also just as fierce as the commander bear that is dominating the album cover! “Style” sets the catwalk on fire and moshes on its ashes while “Cant Stop Wont Stop” has a nice little black metal riff towards the end.

I can go on and on about this but you just gotta check it for yourselves which I’m sure will have you as hooked as yours truly was! Listen to this feisty beast on Spotify and get your copy here! If you’re really hooked like we are on their crossover goodness, check out the rest of their material in their bandcamp.

6 out 6, Everybody’s doing the ‘Metal Bear Stomp’!

Exhumed Put the ‘Death’ Metal in ‘Death Revenge’

Exhumed welcomes us in to their horror show titled Death Revenge via Relapse Records. The legendary death metallers are hungry for blood and metal and so are we! Well actually just metal and they delivered. Exhumed starts this show with the instrumental intro that Michael Meyers would adopt as his new theme song, Matt Harvey soon takes over and lets that intro riff loose, and is soon followed by drummer Mike Hamilton and the rest of the band. That’s right they jump right in to the death metal extravaganza.

“Night Work” has never been so good especially if it means we get another sweet riff from Harvey. “The Harrowing,” “A Funeral Party,” and “Unspeakable” are sure to get your blood flowing especially when you’re pumpin’ iron at the gym or running after the bus.  “The Anatomy Act of 1832” is a great instrumental track in this American horror story.

Exhumed do something different this time around and set the mood and pique our interest with the theatrical interludes and intros. That’s right, they don’t give up that sweet death metal right then and there, they make us salivate and work for it and hot damn we love it! I do love the horror flick vibe they are going for in this album and did I mention I like the concept? No? Well I really like it! And I’m sure you will too. You can listen to Death Revenge on Spotify and you can get you copy here. If you are a fellow San Diegan, snag your tix for their Nov. 15 in our city.

Nachtblut Will Convert You With Latest

Get ready to unleash the inner goth in you, metalhead! You will not resist especially after you believe in Nachtblut’s latest album Apostasie which was released to the masses via Napalm Records. The German quintet spread the love with the grim “Multikulturell” which has several little riffs and hooks from guitarist Greif that will tease you in to the rest of the album.

“Scheinfromm” will blow the lid off your skepticism that “goth” music is not your “thing.” Why?! You ask with venomous doubt! Because this “goth” track has that feisty attitude you like so much. A tune my industrial heads (?) will enjoy a little bit more is “Geboren um zu Leben” because it has more of that fun electronic element present which make you violently dance, the J-Ohster can already picture the awesome remixes on this one! And if you’re not feelin’ rowdy “Einsam” will soothe the beast inside you.

The edgier tracks that staunch metalheads will enjoy a little more is “Der Tod Ist Meine Nutte” which has another great intro riff, and “Wat Is Denn Los Mit Dir.” Apostasie is hellbent on making you believe in Nachtblut, no hypnosis needed! You see what I did there? I made a shitty vamp joke! …everyone’s a critic. Get you copy here and see if you are ready to follow Nachtblut.

Sicarius Create A Wicked ‘Serenade’ In Debut

For those of you that keep up with our shenanigans and read our latest edition of First Impressions, you probably have an idea who Sicarius is. The debut full length album from Sicarius is finally here and they are taking no prisoners in Serenade of Slitting Throats which was releases via M-Theory Audio Records.

These expert assassins sneak in and lure you in to a sweet melodic trap with their instrumental intro before plunging a black metal dagger into your ears with “Ferox Impetum.” Still want more unforgiving black metal eh? “Forceful Bleed” is the one for you! This track is sure to make your ears and butthole bleed! But in a good way that is. Sicarius will waste no time and pounce on you once again in this track to prepare you for the grand finale.

The title track “Serenade of Slitting Throats” and “Torture Trials” takes things down a notch but all in the spirit of fueling the antagonistic character of this album. These songs allow you to inhale and process Sicarius’s musical talent. That’s right you can swivel around Kurt Karcass’s thick borderline growling vocals.

Sicarius have risen out of the shadows with their daggers held high and have stepped into the spotlight with this strong debut album. For those that have not checked these guys out, man, you are in for a treat. After submerging yourself in to this bloody Serenade, rest assured you too will be joining the order of Sicarius. Dying Fetus Release the Right One to Listen to

It has been a while since the Klown heard anything from the death metal trio known as Dying Fetus. In fact, it has been five full years since Reign Supreme was released. Nevertheless, Fetus fans may now breathe again because their eighth album Wrong One to Fuck With has been finally released through Relapse Records. The trio begins strongly with “Fixated on Devastation” which features Trey Williams’ powerful double kick drumming, John Gallagher’s fierce growling vocals and powerful riffs without discounting Sean Beasley’s backing vocals and heavy bass strum.

“Panic Amongst the Herd” and “Reveling in the Abyss” slow it down a bit. The difference between both is that “Panic…” featured Beasley’s heavy bass resonating while “Reveling…” featured more of Williams’ drumming. “Die with Integrity” features a retouched version of Dying Fetus but a bit more cleaner as far as sound quality is concerned. “Weaken the Structure” was a pretty awesome and brutal track that featured everyone equally from Williams’ double bass pedaling to Beasley’s heavy bass to Gallagher’s awesome solo and voice going from growling to guttural. The album also includes a bonus track titled “Induce Terror” which sounded like their technical death metal 2007 classic War of Attrition. This album was pretty refreshing to hear and it’s sure to please the Fetus faithful. You can check out and acquire their newest album in the label’s bandcamp.

KMFDM Tease with Their Latest Release

You didn’t think the Klown would ever do some industrial, did you? Joke’s on you! Anyway, the Industrial powerhouse known as KMFDM has released a tormenting EP titled Yeah! through earMusic Records. The reason the Klown says that it’s tormenting is because it’s in anticipation to their next release Hell Yeah due to come out in mid-August. Sascha Konietzko’s famous project treats us to the first hit of the yet-to-be-released LP by beginning with the eponymous title “Hell Yeah” not just in its original incarnation but also as a remixed by Lord of the Lost, and the edited version.

The Klown liked the song but liked the remix a bit more because, although autotune was applied, the song had more range in sound such as the combination of trance with some wide range of electric drum sounds, synthesizers and a sweet guitar solo from Jules Hodgsons. The album also treats us to a radio friendly version of “Freak Flag” which will be featured in the upcoming LP which the Klown can describe as more of an easy listening type of song that can be danced to and features vox/keyboardist Lucia Cifarelli as backing vocals to Konietzko’s autotuned vocals.

This EP also features the a new version of the 2002 hit, which is now titled, “Attak 2017” and turned it into a fast paced trance remix featuring Cifarelli on the helm with heavy use of synthesizers as a foundation and electric drums for pacing. This tease is well worth the listen especially if you’re anticipating Hell Yeah. The Klown highly recommends this album to those who are big on electronic dance music and industrial. Lastly, if you can’t wait or fancy yourself a true fan attempting to collect all the albums, you can get yer copy here. Catch them on tour too and will be here in San Diego at the House of Blues on Oct. 20 and you can get your tickets right here.

Municipal Waste  Rewards the Fans with Album

The Klown believes that he invoked Municipal Waste when he reviewed Tony Foresta and Phil “Landphil” Hall’s other brainchild, Iron Reagan. Ask and you shall receive because the kings of the Richmond punk scene have returned and wasted no time to introduce their new album Slime and Punishment through Nuclear Blast Records.

Just like it was to expected the Muni Waste steamrolls to the album with nothing but pure adrenaline of the punk variety starting with “Breathe Grease.” “Enjoy the Night” jumpstarts itself with the radical and groovy bass sounds of Landphil and power through with Ryan Waste and Nick “Nikropolis” Poulo’s fast and intense guitar riffs. Waste shows off his guitar solo in “Dingy Situations” which feature Forest’s powerful punk vocals and Dave Witte fast and powerful drumming.

“Poison the Preacher” features Foresta’s vocals go from his usual high screaming vocals to mild  growling. “Bourbon Discipline” and “Slime and Punishment” are just a few tracks that give you some customary Muni Waste sounds aside from their famous chorus. “Amateur Sketch” starts out with a muffled guitar solo and immediately unleashes the adrenaline thereafter. The album finishes with “Think Fast” which starts off slow and immediately picks up the pace after the breakdown and features the myriad of bass, drums, briefs solos accompanying Foresta’s speedy vocals. This was a good album and featured a little bit of everything from this prolific band. You can attain a copy here and check it out.

Goatwhore Comeback with a ‘Vengeance’!

The NOLA quartet has graced the Ugh Metal twice before. Right now, though, the Klown is about indulging you with their seventh album Vengeful Ascension which was released through Metal Blade Records. Goatwhore put a huge emphasis on vengeance. The group commences their acts of Vengeance with the heavy and aggressive songs titled “Forsaken” and “Vengeful Ascension” which features some strong bass and guitar riffs courtesy of James Harvey and Sammy Duet which compliment vox L.Ben Falgoust II’s harsher vocals.

If you are hankering for some traditional Goatwhore sounds then the band treats you to “Under the Flesh, Into the Soul” and “Chaos Arcane” which are prime examples of what the Klown speaks of. The band takes a page from their past selves and revisit some of the black metal influences with “Where the Sun is Silent” which the Klown enjoyed very much and can say that although a little slow it builds up but remains consistent. The drummer Zack Simmons shines brightly with “Abandon Indoctrination” and “Mankind Will Have No Mercy” with thundering double kicks and fast drumming which are then accompanied by an awesome solo provided by Duet. The group end their latest reprisal with the fast paced “Those Who Denied God’s Will” which not only featured some fast paced drumming,  guitar solos and some intense bass. This album was a great comeback from these Voodoo kings from the bayous. Lastly you can get a hold of this album at the band’s bandcamp. Also catch them in town too at the Brick By Brick on Sept. 20 with Venom Inc. and Toxic Holocaust so get your tickets here.

Jyrki 69 Releases His Gothtastic Side

Jyrki 69, the front man of The 69 Eyes, has ditched the sleazy black lights and has returned to the intimacy of his gothic estate for his solo project. Cleopatra Records has opened the crypt and set the brooding Helsinki Vampire free to seduce the black hearts and restore the goth back into “goth n’ roll.”  The album celebrates this new beginning with “Ad Infinitum,” a seven and half minute song that starts slow with a faint and ominous chorus which ultimately builds up to a new wave type of song with Jyrki 69’s baritone vocals making an appearance towards the end.

The piano chords in the forlorn “Versailles” may remind The 69 Eyes fans about their Paris Kills and Blessed Be days. “Spanish Steps” features some synths which shine in the moonlight of nostalgia (… I’m not crying, you’re crying!) and every other song . Jyrki 69 changes the mood and scares away the melancholic with his two singles the danceable “Bloodlust” and the horror tribute “Last Halloween.” You think Jyrki 69 is going to keep things light? WRONG! Jyrki 69 then spills out the gloomy “Happy Birthday,” which is GOTH APPROVED! Get your brooding face ready again with “Call Of The Night” and “In Your Dreams.”

By this point it’s a little obvi what yours truly thinks about Helsinki Vampire because I practically spoke about the entire album. The faithful followers of The 69 Eyes who particularly loved their gothic sound and the new wave elements will certainly drink this baby up! For those that liked their sleazy roots may be a little iffy before giving in to Jyrki 69. This Helsinki Vampire is sure to glamour those Tripp pants off especially if you make this album your own by clicking this link.

Ugh Metal Joins The Brotherhood Of Testament

Testament show us their power!
(L to R: Guitarist Alex Skolnick, bassist Steve Di Giorgio and vocalist Chuck Billy)

Legendary thrashers Testament brought some of that bay area thrash to our shores at the House of Blues on May 16 on their first California stop. This show’s a little extra special because not only was it a Testament show with an impressive lineup with seasoned metallers in tow such as Prong and Sepultura but because it was on the eve of our first anniversary (May 17)! That’s right, one year of murdering grahmmur and counting, sweet cheeks! Before you ask, yes, we are accepting gifts but please settle down guys, not all at once! Now enough about us and back to the unofficial Ugh Metal birthday pre-party!

Assuming mercury was in retrograde that day, we sadly made it a little over halfway to Prong’s set due to a few setbacks…I know, we are ready for the “BOO, YOU WHORES!!” The Ugh Metal stooges arrived just in time for the song that they were shouting at the Ugh Metal mark #2 a few minutes before hopping on the Ugh Metal mark #1, “Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck.” We will not confirm nor deny that it was actually the other way around, since the U.M.M.2 was allegedly not complying and laughing at them while they pushed its lifeless ass and parked it… you know what, back to the show. YAY!

Prong soothed the Ugh Metal stooges’ sore, decrepit bodies and made everyone come alive with their 1994 hit. Though frontman/ guitarist Tommy Victor remained faithful to his mic stand, he expelled a lot of passion and intensity for this rabid anthem while bassist Mike Longworth buzzed around and drummer Art Cruz was merciless at the drum kit. We hope to see the trio back in our neck of woods and hope to be there for the WHOLE set.

Prong play the song we were shouting at the Ugh Metal mobile mark 2 earlier in the evening, “Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck.” Thanks for giving us the shitty spot U.M.M.2 -_-
(L to R: Drummer Art Cruz, vocalist/guitarist Tommy Victor and bassist/backing vocalist Mike Longworth)

The co-headliners don’t need an introduction, it was the renowned Sepultura cover band called Sepultura 2.0! TROLOLOL! Assuming this grabbed your attention and you fell in to the trap and are still reading all I have to say for myself is, don’t get your band tees and vinyls in a bunch and grow up! TROLOLOL’ing aside, the iconic name alone had the warm and sweaty bodies around us grow closer in a non sexual way… for once… ‘cause we totally get that all the time ‘cause we’re Ugh Metal, betch! Anyway, now that its increasingly quite right now, let me tell you that it was anything but quiet especially when Sepultura’s Derrick Green unleashed his growl for “I Am The Enemy” with the instrumental chaos blaring.

The string of new material didn’t end there! Machine Messiah was there to stay as the band dove right into “Phantom Self” and later in the set played the theatrical “Resistant Parasites” and “Sworn Oath” which Green fueled with intensity as he passionately expelled the lyrics. Sepultura knew that fans were gonna be craving the old stuff and they delivered and sandwiched “Kaiowas” from Chaos A.D. in between the newer stuff.

Sepultura show us who are the “Messiah”
(L to R: Bassist Paulo Jr., vocalist Derrick Green, drummer , and Eloy Casagrande and guitarist Andreas Kisser)

That’s not all! It’s not a Sepultura show without their iconic hits but they weren’t gonna unload the goods so early into the show. The thrashers wrapped up their set with their iconic songs “Refuse/Resist,” “Ratamahatta” and of course “Roots Bloody Roots.” Though Green’s take on these hits felt slightly tamer than Max Cavalera’s because they are obviously two different artists with their own style, the frontman made them his own. Green’s version may (personally) feel slightly mellow but they will slowly burrow itself into your brain and muscles and then BAM! You’re in the pit or raising some hell! Whereas Cavalera’s immediately slaps you silly and makes you ready to fuck shit up.

Having seen Cavalera not once but twice this year gave me this personal feel and better insight in this half assed elementary level compare and contrast. To be clear though, I am NOT bashing on Green or Sepultura. In fact, it was such a tremendous honor to finally see these legends perform in our hometown. It’s still borderline surreal that the Ugh Metal team was so fortunate to be intoxicated with Green’s melodic but harsh vocals and see THE Andreas Kisser shred live and in Technicolor before our eyes and a few feet away from us.

Derrick Green of Sepultura sounds off the military drums!
(L to R: Bassist Paulo Jr., vocalist Derrick Green, drummer Eloy Casagrande and guitarist Andreas Kisser)

Kisser is gifted to say the least and you can watch him play for hours, as he rightfully deserves to be the metal living legend. Lest we forget OG supreme member and bassist Paulo Jr. slapped that bass like his life depended on it while flashing his warmest smile to their faithful legions. Maybe someday we’ll be treated to a duet with Green and Cavalera and the rest of Sepultura jamming, a girl can dream, right!?

Now that the crowd was riled up and rejoicing in their bloody roots, Testament officially inducted us all to the “Brotherhood of the Snake” and had us “Rise Up” in our invisible seats and ended their first set of new songs with “Centuries of Suffering” with a mesmerizing guitar solo from Alex Skolnick. Skolnick was not the only one to show off his skills that night, throughout the performance guitarist Eric Peterson, drummer Gene Hoglan and bassist Steve Di Giorgio had their moment in the sun and created a melodic supernova.

Alex Skolnick of Testament promises more cool riffs for those that join the brotherhood…AND pies!

The thrashers busted out the big guns and dusted off classics that they had not performed live in a long time.  The pit grew when vocalist Chuck Billy announced “Low” and their ode to the sweaty whirlpool “Into The Pit” and “Souls of Black.” Billy kept the nostalgia alive by sharing a personal anecdote when they were touring and trying to think of an album title for their follow up to The New Order.

Billy reminisced how drunk they had gotten during the filming of a music video when they were in Texas, and how they attended the local bar where a little known band by the name of Pantera was playing. After meeting and living it up with the up and coming musicians, inspiration struck Billy and named their follow up Practice What You Preach and performed the titular song.

Testament induct us into the “Brotherhood of the Snake”
(L to R: Guitarist Alex Skolnik, bassist Steve Di Giorgio and vocalist Chuck Billy)

Testament wrapped up their fantastic set with the super classic “Over The Wall” off of their debut The Legacy. It was Ugh Metal’s first time in seven years watching these bay area thrashers live and it was worth the wait. If San Diego had their own version of Clash of the Titans show, we’d hope to see these icons in our backyard again!

Urine has decided to embark on his own adventure and help you conquer that one stage you can’t get past with his solo album The Secret Cinematic Sounds Of Jimmy Urine which is now streaming on The End Records’ YouTube channel. Urine’s solo album won’t be unlocked for the masses till April 28 via The End Records, but for now indulge on the entire album. The Sermon of Suicidal Tendencies

Suicidal Tendencies everyone!

On February 23, the pastor known as Mike Muir and his posse came to Ugh Metal’s humble abode and neighborhood where they converted the Observatory in North Park into their church. It was a night that truly kicked ass which had another legendary group know as Crowbar and one working on their legendary status (A.K.A Havok). Most importantly if this is the final round for Suicidal Tendencies, at least Ugh Metal had the pleasure to experience them. So without further ado, the Klown shall indulge you on what happened on that sold out show.

First up, the thrash quartet known as Havok indulged us with thrash reminiscent to that of the 80’s and similar to the likes of Exodus. Havok kicked us off with “Point of No Return,” which seemed like a rather appropriate song to get shit started. Once frontman/rhythm guitarist David Sanchez let loose those pipes, we knew we were in for a treat. Worth noting, Sanchez vocals sounded similar to that Exodus’s Steve Souza.

Havok live up to their name!
(L to R: Lead guitarist Reece Scruggs, vocalist/rhytym guitarist David Sanchez and bassist/back up vocalist Nick Schendzielos)

The thrashers also treated us to a sneak peek (which also served as an incentive) of their upcoming album Comformicide and played “Hang’em High,”“Claiming Certainty” and “Intention to Deceive.” Lastly, this quartet rounded up their time with the very awesome thrash anthem “Give Me Liberty… or Give Me Death.” It was a fucking treat seeing these guys live, they did a great job setting the tone and definitely had shit going from there on out.

After the gents from Denver cleared the stage, the legendary quartet from NOLA cooled our jets a bit to save some energy. Once Crowbar front man Kirk Windstein got on the mic and announced that they were going to kick our ass, we all knew that they meant business. They proceeded with our ass kicking with “Burn Your World” and followed up with “High Rate Extinction.”

The crowd got more riled up once “Walk with Knowledge Wisely” and “New Dawn.” Crowbar covered Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter,” which sounded bitchin’ and awesome live because they knew how to incorporate their brand of sludge into this cover proving why they are the pioneers this sub genre. Of course, this Crowbar show wouldn’t have been complete without “Like Broken Glass” and capped off their performance with Mr. Meeseeks theme song, “Existence Is Punishment.”

Crowbar in all their sludgy glory!
(L to R: Guitarist Matthew Brunson ,vocalist/guitarist Kirk Windstein, and bassist Todd Strange

Worth noting before the Klown moves on to the headliners, Crowbar, surprisingly didn’t perform any songs from their latest album like he thought they would. Mainly because the Klown expected to hear “I Am The Storm” or “The Serpent Only Lies” and because their latest album The Serpent Only Lies came out four months ago. Other than that it wasn’t disappointing at all! The Klown and the rest of San Diego hope to see these gents again in the near future.

Funny story about the Suicidal Tendencies show, the Klown thought that the Finest City wasn’t going to top or outdo Santa Ana! The Klown and the Ugh Metal team were glad to be proven wrong! The Klown especially knew that we were in for a treat the moment one of their roadies became the hype man. The moment felt magical as Mike Muir made his way to the stage right after his introduction. Naturally, Muir’s sermon started with the anthem of positivity, “You Can’t Bring Me Down.” Right from the start, guitarist Jeff Poogan and bassist Ra Diaz were as infectious and energetic as Muir himself. If it wasn’t Muir in the spotlight it was Poogan or Diaz trading places with him.

Stay tuned for The Passion of Mike Muir: Part 2?

The show got pumped when “War Inside My Head” was performed which only grew crazier and unexpected when Muir invited his best friend and San Diegan skateboarding legend, Dennis Martinez to share the spotlight with him. On stage, the frontman expressed his gratitude for the skating community and congratulated Martinez for being inducted into the skateboard hall of fame. Muir then celebrated by inviting skaters to join him on stage and mosh during their performance of “Possessed to Skate.”

Mike Muir still slayed among the skater pit.

After the skater pit cleared, we got another pit on stage going for “I Saw Your Mommy” where Muir briefly descended  and handed out high fives and greetings to fans on the guard rails. The Klown felt fortunate to be among those he high fived and greeted. The Klown would have felt a tad incomplete without hearing “Institutionalized,” luckily that wasn’t the case! Of course a bit of a sermon was given by Pastor Muir about living life to the fullest and being true to you. Y’know, it’s the type of inspirational and motivational speech that would make Tony Robbins blush.

Diaz fueled the hype by having fans shout “ST!” for the chorus line to do our “Pledge of Allegiance” properly. Before the grand finale, Suicidal Tendencies treated us to an extra song that summed up Muir’s words of positivity and presence that radiated off of him with “Living For Life.” This truly was an amazing show, the Klown and Ugh Metal felt fortunate to have been there and experience a Suicidal Tendencies concert. For those who couldn’t make it or didn’t know, if decide to tour again and comeback be ready! The Klown recommends it and it will be worth it!

Suicidal Tendencies… what a show, what a show!

The Ocean Caught Us On Camera!

Ugh Metal’s Grate Debate may not have been recorded in front of a live audience but the subjects of the epic slap fight did! The Ocean released their outstanding and professionally shot performance of “Rhyacian” from their Nov.8 show at Brick By Brick. Normally we’d be miffed knowing they used the image of our personal unpaid slaves (which we’re legally obligated to call them “interns”) without our permission, but they’re lucky they were so damn good. We forgive you but next time boys, please contact us so that we can exploit our interns together 😉 Experience the intensity of The Ocean!

GWAR B-Q Jumps to 2018 And Promises To Make America Bleed Again

Though GWAR postponed their annual BB-Q slaughter fest and left their faithful bohabs blue balling, it’s all with good reason. According to their official statement, the band will focus this year on producing a new album for 2018 and promise to destroy North America all year long! GWAR has decided to keep the details on the album under wraps to keep the mystique going and ‘cause they’ve been nursing a Pokémon Go addiction. The new record will not only be the first one five years but will also be the first without vocalist/founder Dave “Oderus Urungus” Brockie.  Till then, these lucky cities will have a chance to be invaded!

Six Feet Under Will Have You Tearing Your ‘Flesh From Bone…’

…With excitement, silly! These death metal titans have unleashed another lyric video for the track “The Separation of Flesh From Bone.” Instead of being greeted by riffs a la Cannibal Corpse as heard in “Sacrificial Kill,” Chris Barnes’ bark comes at you, giving your ears a welcomed pounding. Couldn’t get enough of ‘Seperation…’? Save the date of pre-order their Feb.24 album Torment which will be released through Metal Blade Records.

Iron Reagan Strike Again!

I know, I know! Another Iron Reagan entry, but it’s not my fault these guys keep cranking out fun and thrashtastic treats. This time they give us the ultimate and nostalgic gift of CLAYMATION… and a music video, I guess. It should be a crime that “Fuck the Neighbors” is only two minutes and nine seconds long, but man is it fun!!! Can’t get enough of the song?! Then pick up their latest album Crossover Ministry which is out now. Iffy about getting it? Check out what the Klown had to say about it!

Jasta Is Back AND Brought a Friend Along..

When Jamey Jasta isn’t tearing shit up with Hatebreed, he’s tearing shit up with his solo project Jasta. Jasta teamed up with ex-Killswitch Engage/ current Devil You Know vocalist Howard Jones in the single “Chasing Demons” and, man, it induces a bit of nostalgia. Aside from the grit Jasta never fails to deliver, Jones’ vocals blast you back to the old Killswitch Engage days. The balance between this overall sentimental single is great  and will make you wonder what other trick Jasta has under his sleeve.

The Trials of February 3

Black Star Riders Start February with Some ‘Heavy Fire’

Thin Lizzy fans will tell you right off the bat who these guys are. Why you ask? Because it’s the majority of Thin Lizzy but under the new name. With that said, these gents have released their third installment titled Heavy Fire under Nuclear Blast Records. This album was good and gives the hard rocker in you the fix it needs for some classics with a fresher take. I dunno if the Riders spy on the Klown or not but “Dancing with the Wrong Girl” was basically the story of the Klown’s life. On a serious note regarding the song, it mixes old 70’s blues rock with the modern rhythmic hard rock sounds. The Klown definitely dug “Who Rides the Tiger,” it was great and has Scott Gorham’s legendary riffs and solos times 2. Need a modern day love montage of a song? The Riders got you covered with “Cold War Love.” “Ticket to Rise” gives you a bit of hard country rock with a female chorus as back up. The Riders also add an extra track to the mix titled “Fade,” which follows that same style of “Ticket…,” but with a dominant rock element.

Nailed To Obscurity Make a Return Fit for a ‘King’

Nailed To Obsucity, who named themselves after the Klown’s upcoming bio, have returned to the masses with a third album titled King Delusion via Apostasy Records. The titled of this album also happens to be the name of the first chapter off of the Klown’s tale but enough about the Klown! The German quintet produced a mellow record as far as death metal goes which you can also check this bad boy out through their bandcamp. The first track “King Delusion” will feature both mellowness and then a brief death metal heaviness that can be associated with Dark Tranquility. The tracks “Momento” and “Devoid” took the Klown back to memory lane and reminded him of classic Arch Enemy when Johan Liiva was on vocals. “Uncage My Sanity” was awesome and melodic AF and really invoked those Dark Tranquility vibes but if Mikael Stanne ditched the clean vocals. “Desolate Ruin” is great closer and features an awesome melodic solo to make a smooth wrap.

Horisont Bring Back the Sounds of the Counter Culture

Have you ever wanted to experience the sounds synonymous with Woodstock or the 70s? To the veteran rocker reading this, would you like to hear the sounds again but in a newer and crisp fashion? Good news, Horisont have returned with a brand new album titled About Time through Century Media Records! This Swedish quintet will get you far out and in to a simpler but psychedelic territory. “The Hive” kicks off this journey and is a good track that sets the tone for this aforementioned journey that the Klown speaks of. “Electric” strikes right after the first track charging this odyssey by upping the tempo morphing to a catchy hard rock song. Though “Letare” is faster, it still maintains its trippiness unlike “Electric.” The current single, “About Time,” is by far the mellowest track of the whole album that builds up towards a big finish and was appropriately chosen as the final track of the album. The Klown recommends this album for those who legitimately enjoy the classics from the 60s and 70s and Scorpion Child.

Iron Reagan Have Made a Congregation in the Name of Crossover

While the Klown and others like him wait for a new Municipal Waste album, Tony Foresta and Phillip “Land Phil” Hall provide a great buffer in the form of Iron Reagan. Their third installment Crossover Ministry has finally been released through Relapse Records and it’s fucking awesome. “Dead With My Friends” is not only one of the Klown’s favorite track but it’s also true to the spirit of Crossover. “Condition Evolution” is more of a hardcore punk song but most importantly it will induce uncontrollable moshing. Yes, it’s that kind of awesome. Remember how the Klown spoke about a Municipal Waste album? The greatest substitute Iron Reagan provides for this Muni Waste drought is “Fuck the Neighbors” and “More War.” Not only are these two tracks awesome but they also have the humor Muni Waste is known for. This album was awesome and fun as hell. Highly recommended for punk and metal heads  and those that love the Crossover subgenre and hardcore punk!

“Ask and you shall receive” couldn’t be truer for the latest music video from deathcore metallers Lorna Shore. The quartet from New Jersey take us on a murder mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Though I’ve personally never taken a dip in Lorna Shore before, “Fvneral Moon” is a very enjoyable and heavy single which will be featured in their upcoming album Flesh Coffin out on Feb. 17 via Outerloop Records. If you’re still butt hurt about Suicide Silence’s clean vocals and have a need to forget about it, Lorna Shore’s got you covered.

THE EMPIRE WILL STRIKE THIS SUMMER…

No, not the Prez’s empire nor the new Star Wars saga, I’m talking about the REAL empire where Vader reigns supreme. The Polish death metal icons will kick off their invasion on North America starting May 26 in the Maryland Death Fest and because they don’t hate the idea of our beaches, our delicious craft beers and just flat out don’t hate us, they will be stopping by here in San Diego on June 7 at Brick By Brick! (This is NOT the only San Diego show headlined by metal legends this year…)

The supporting acts on this brootal tour are Internal Bleeding, Sacrificial Slaughter, Micawber and Voices of Ruin. If you’re old like us, those names might make your deteriorating body quiver with anticipated pain but as the motto goes, sticks and stones may break our frail bones but metal will never hurt us… be sure to check your local listings for Ugh Metal’s after party in the nearest ER and be part of the crusade!

Havok Offers Another Wonderful Song For Inauguration Day

The Colorado thrashers have joined in on the fun and joined today’s celebration of American infamy history with their lyric video for “Hang ‘Em High.” You bet this anthem will be sung loudly and proudly tonight making this day more unforgettable. “Hang ‘Em High” will be featured in their March 10 album titled Conformicide which will be released through Century Media Records.
