The Trials of July 21

Nine Inch Nails Continues to Tease with Latest EP

Assuming you keep up with the Klown’s album reviews, Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails made their first Ugh Metal appearance at the beginning of this year with their December 23, 2016, release Not the Actual Events EP. Mr. Reznor has returned with another teasing EP titled Add Violence through Reznor’s own label, The Null Corporation.

The EP begins with “Less Than” which gives an upbeat 80’s throwback sound in the beginning which remains so throughout the rest of the song and reminded him a bit of the 2013 Hesitation Marks album. The Klown can describe as rather ambient like the Ghosts albums but with vocals. In fact, this would be a running theme throughout the majority of the EP up until “Not Anymore.”

“Not Anymore” brings back the old school NIN sound with some ambience and had Reznor’s vocals somewhat faded and autotuned. “The Background World” was the final and longest track of the whole EP and it was rather reminiscent to that of the 1994 Downward Spiral album in term of sounds, pace and mixing and with some lengthy heavy, and distorted bass. The album was a pretty nice surprise given the fact it came out of nowhere. You can get your copy of this EP here to check it out.

In This Moment Contemporary Turns Headbanging into Rite

The female fronted quintet known as In This Moment has released their sixth album Ritual through Atlantic Records and manages to surprise fans. This album begins strongly with “Oh Lord”  and starts out rather slow but bluesy, and industrial in terms of sound. Frontwoman Maria Brink uses autotune to sing adding reverb and to simulate some fading effect in her voice.

The real treat comes immediately when legendary frontman Rob Halford lent his renowned vocals for “Black Wedding” which a plays around a bit with Billy Idol’s “White Wedding” famous verse y’know? “It’s a nice day for a white wedding,” the difference being the color. Although Brink and company teased a cover with “Black Wedding” she delivers in covering Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight,” which the Klown rather enjoyed. The song has a darker touch and presence by being a song about taking someone back, tearfully and, at least in the Klown’s opinion, the feminine touch adds more of a significant perspective. It’s almost as if Collins’ had unintentionally written for a female vocalist. No matter the case it was well done and will have you feeling the feels.

ITM give a shout out to Rob Zombie with “Witching Hour” not only does it have a B-movie role sound bite in the beginning and follow up with a bit of the groggy, stoner influences. “Half God, Half Devil” was a great song and almost felt like they took a page out of Rammstein’s book in terms of sounds and lyrical content because it was rather powerful giving the song more meaning.

This album finishes with the dark ballad “Lay Your Gun Down” which seemed like the perfect ending given what seemed like a running theme for this album as well the chance to enjoy some of Brink’s clean vocals and piano performance. You can get this album here and hear for yourself.

Decrepit Birth Release their Most Brutal Album to Date

The Californian quartet known as Decrepit Birth have released their fourth album Axis Mundi through Nuclear Blast Records. The album blew the Klown’s nose off once the “Vortex of Infinity… Axis Mundi” played because it was a powerful beginning. Although the track is extremely brief, the song commences with a sample before the combination of Matt Sotelo’s opening riff, Sean “Angry Face” Martinez’s bass and Sam “Samus” Paulicelli’s double kicks blasting the Klown’s eardrums, the Klown knew he was in for a treat.

“Spirit Guide” will be your technical death metal spirit guide if you would like to continue on the path of technical death metal bliss and add the sounds of a harpsichord towards the end. As for the pure “classical” sounds of technical death metal, “The Sacred Geometry” and “Transcendental Paradox” are just a few examples of some pure technical death metal. The band as a whole showed off their skills in these tracks which consisted of Sotelo’s killer guitar riffs and solos,  Samus’s speedy double kicks, Angry Face’s heavy bass and Bill Robinson’s brutal snarling vocals.

“Embryogenesis,” on the other hand, gives you more technical without vocals and plays with synthesizers which at times had classical strings which made for a pretty good intro for Metallica’s cover of “Orion.” Decrepit Birth also covered another classic   “Desperate Cry”  from Sepultura’s 1991 Arise, which the Klown will admit enjoyed a lot. The Klown can say that this song was given a much-needed revitalization for the Sepultura faithful and reach a new potential audience who have never really been exposed to the classics.

Lastly, the quartet finishes this album with a cover to Suffocation’s “Infecting the Crypts.” This album was awesome and the Klown recommends you wrap your ears around this album especially if your thing is technical death metal. You can obtain a copy of this album here.

Wintersun, At Long Last, Releases their Album

Jari Mäenpää’s project known as Wintersun has finally returned and delivered to its patient fans a new album as promised.  After much turmoil and tribulations, the third and latest installment The Forest Seasons has been released through Nuclear Blast Records. The contemporary record starts off with “Awaken from the Dark Slumber (Spring)” which the Klown can describe as lengthy but awesome as hell.

Mäenpää and crew take you on a journey filled with folk and symphonic death metal to make a perfect harmonious marriage. The Klown is well aware that Wintersun is not a death metal band before you staunch heads start to call out the Klown for probably thinking that Amon Amarth may be the same. Nevertheless, the Klown assures you that during that 14-plus minute song there is some symphonic death metal incorporated and is a great beginning.

“The Forest that Weeps (Summer)” follows up with some pretty bitchin’ folk and contains some wind instrumentals highlighting Mäenpää, Teemu Mäntysaari and Jukka Koskinen’s vocals, making the song feel more like an anthem than just an ordinary Folk metal song. The track includes some harp sounds and an epic male choir chorus for added effect. “The Forest…” also has an array of all stars within the Scandinavian metal community that lend their voices for the choir such as Heri Joensen from Tyr, Markus Toivonen from Ensiferum, Mitja Harvilahti from Moonsorrow, and various member of Turisas just to name a few.

Wintersun makes a 180 turn for “Eternal Darkness (Autumn)” by showing off some epic black metal with his folk much like the trailblazing Bathory did years before them. This must be the first time the Klown has heard Mäenpää showing off anything black metal related. The frontman’s vocals were understandable but harsh  and were accompanied by a chorus and featured Kai Hahto really thunder his treble and double bass drums like the living drumming legend Jan Axel Blomberg aka Hellhammer from Mayhem. The song also contains some synths and samples to justify the Klown’s take. This song had the Klown thinking that he was probably listening to a lost Dimmu Borgir track from Death Cult Armageddon .

The album finishes with “Loneliness (Winter)” which features Mäenpää perform clean and harmonious vocals which have the ability to make a hard ass weep. “Loneliness (Winter)” felt like the perfect closer to this long awaited release. The Klown highly recommends you get a hold of this copy because it was really worth the wait. Speaking of acquisitions, you can immediately obtain a copy through the Wintersun’s Bandcamp.

Tye Trujillo Debuts His Band

Let’s face it, 12-year-old Tye Trujillo is the real star of this Korn tour and good for him! The son of Metallica bassist (Robert Trujillo) made his live debut after Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu literally dropped the bass and was unable to join Korn on their South American tour. Footage of the young Trujillo quickly went viral, and he handles the bass and the spotlight like a pro. Trujillo is on his way to build an impressive resume and is sure to surpass his old man. Now if you excuse me, I’m gonna go and reexamine my pathetic life but while I do that, enjoy this pro footage of Trujillo kicking ass.

Dat Riot Fest Line up Tho!

The lineup to the annual music festival in Chicago is impressive to say the least. Wha? You calling me a liar?! How does Nine Inch Nails, Bad Brains, Queens of the Stone Age, Ministry and GWAR sound like? OH and that’s just the tip of the iceberg by the way, I haven’t even scratched the surface in this mother of a fest! Riot Fest will take place from September 15-17 in Chicago’s Douglas Park and tickets are on sale now through Ticketfly. Undress this poster with your eyes, bb.

Prepare to ‘Die On My Ride’

Tengger Cavalry debuted the lyric video for “Die On My Ride,” a battle song that will certainly resonate in your head. Though frontman Nature Ganganbaigal doesn’t dish out his signature throat singing, he does something different and shows off cleaner but deeper vocals with remnants of his trademark style. Beneath the battle scars this track proudly displays, a pained and subtle hopelessness bleeds through sending the quintet into uncharted territory we can’t wait to see!

“Die On My Ride” will be featured on Tengger Cavalry’s first album, as a signed band, titled Die On My Ride via M-Theory Audio on June 2. The announcement comes a few months after the nomadic warriors joined the burgeoning record label helmed by Marci Barbieri, who was the former president of Century Media and Nuclear Blast USA. Tengger Cavalry will announce dates of their North American raid in the coming weeks and will take over European festivals in the summer. So, grab your axe and pre-order digitally on their bandcamp or physically on M-Theory Audio’s site. Check out my slave intern’s (who’s obsessed with me) “professional” take on this story on Metal Assault.

Internal Bleeding Tragically Lose A Founding Member

One of the founding fathers and drummer of Internal Bleeding, William “Bill” Tolley, has passed away after a fall while on duty as a firefighter. According to CBS New York, Tolley had finished ventilating a burning building and attempted to step back in to the basket when the aerial ladder shook, causing him to plummet five stories. The 42-year-old succumbed to his injuries in Wyckoff Heights Hospital and leaves behind a wife and an 8-year-old daughter.

“Our drummer, the heartbeat of the band, William Tolley died today. There are ZERO WORDS to describe the loss. He was a good, decent and honorable man who loved his friends, his family and the people he served.” The band stated in their Facebook page. “There will never be another like him. There are no words to describe the utter sadness and despair we feel right now. We love you Bill.”

Guitarist Chris Pervelis and Tolley found the band in 1991 and created the death metal subgenre known as “slam” which has more of a distinct and slower breakdown and rhythm than your average death metal. Internal Bleeding is set to hit the road in the summer with Vader and have yet to make a statement regarding any changes. Our deepest condolences to Tolley’s family, friends and Internal Bleeding. Thank you for 26 years of brutality and thank you for your service, Mr.Tolley.

When Bill Tolley wasn’t tearing a new one in your ear holes, he was out in the streets of NYC saving lives.

Internal Bleeding Commemorate Fallen Brother With Music Video

The New York death metallers kept on slammin’ despite the sudden loss of their drummer/founding member William “Bill” Tolley, releasing their music video for “Final Justice.” The video kicks off with the firefighter portrait of Tolley with a heartfelt message from the band and is ended with “Slam On.” Aside from this being a sick and brutal song, this simple music video became more meaningful, and shows the guys doing what they love alongside Tolley. The single is now available for purchase through bandcamp.

Alestorm Raises A Glass To Themselves

After finding their way out of the Gay Dolphin, our favorite inebriated buccaneers have released a fun little ode to themselves with the music video for their latest single “Alestorm.” Getting lost in the Gay Dolphin was the least of their worries and must now fight themselves to gain their rightful place in drunkenness, though I know you must think I must still be celebrating 4/20, watch the video and see what I mean! And if you like what you hear, pre order their May 26 album No Grave But The Sea which will set sail via Napalm Records.

 ‘Seraphic’ Will Reel You In

Ghost Bath lures you into the depths of harmony and despair with their latest music video for “Seraphic.” The video is filled with holy imagery and is embedded with images of the band jamming. Beware! If you’re expecting a relaxing instrumental piece, Dennis Mikula’s anguished screams will come right at you! This track will be featured in their April 21 album Starmourner and will be released through Nuclear Blast. Though individuals with an acquired taste will love this, this is a nice track someone can enjoy if they’re open to it.

The Trials of the New Year… and Yesteryear!

The Klown’s Note: Greetings and salutations to all. If you keep up with us, sorry for the sudden disappearing act and happy holidays, to you! For some, the holidays are over but for others like my Hispanic peeps that keep up with us, as of this writing, Feliz Dia de los Reyes Magos! On that note, here are some late stocking stuffers for the metal heads celebrating who are looking for some tunes to give or for themselves! But first let me introduce the last batch of 2016 releases that stood out before kicking it to the curb! Before the Klown forgets, Ugh Metal would like to send out their condolences to the victims and the surviving members of the shooting that occurred in Ft. Lauderdale. That should not be a way to ring in the New Year.

December 23: Nine Inch Nails Release was Festive and Eventful

If you thought that after the randomness the legendary Trent Reznor had going on after his marriage and The Social Network composition was the end of Nine Inch Nails, you were dead wrong! I believe we told you about it *cough* read it *cough* before we went MIA and our unfaithful hellhounds posted our faces on the back of milk cartons. The latest EP is titled Not The Actual Events and It’s much like their last studio album Hesitation Marks and this EP is reminiscent of that album. After the introductory track “Branches/Bones,” “Dear World” follows soon after and begins resonates with the Year Zero album. All the while, the rest of the EP relives the days of an earlier NIN of the Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral variety. This was the perfect Christmas gift for the most hardcore NIN fan and those who love industrial to death!

December 31st: Demonseed Helps Dispose 2016 with Sophomore Album

The Texan death metal quintet emerged and gave us quite a surprise in 2016 by releasing Human Disposal Syndicate, nearly 13 years after their debut studio album! Nevertheless, these gents provided the Klown with a soundtrack to flip off 2016 and ring in 2017. The track “Human Disposal Syndicate” gets shit stirred and going with some extra added brutality. Listening to this album had yours truly thinking that he was listening to a brutal version of The Black Dahlia Murder. “A Hopeless Concentration of Carnal Misery” and “Mongolian Death Worm,” however, made the Klown feel as he was listening to a slightly heavier version of Blood Red Throne. Lastly, “Searching Through the Carcass of a Hooker” and “A Beast in the Field” sounded like Kronos. This album was pretty awesome and proves that patience truly is a virtue and has its rewards. The Klown highly recommends this album to diehard fans of the brutal death metal subgenre and for those looking for a band with a Cannibal Corpse motif in the term of artwork and song titles!

Mordskog Releases Their Long Awaited Debut

Kvltists will rejoice! The Black Metal trio from Mexico City known as Mordskog has finally damned blessed us with a debut titled XIII. Die hard Black Metal fans are definitely going to love this album, especially because the trio bring out the spirit of old school Black Metal with thrash metal overtones, which is rather evident in their track “Mors Est Vitae Essentia.” If you are learning Spanish or thought that Black Metal was only done in English, German or in Scandinavian dialects, this trio incorporates some Spanish in their music much like their track “Nascentes Morimur.” Don’t worry though, it’s really more Spanglish than actual Spanish. Mordskog was slowly making rounds in the metal scene and quietly rose especially among the growing Latin American Black Metal scene and they delivered. Although the album is still a little rough, it was a good start for these Chilangos to start making some noise. Expect these guys to really surprise us with a strong breakthrough album in the near future!

Dropkick Murphys Kick Off The New Year with their 9th Album

The Klown is aware that the Dropkick Murphys are Celtic Punk but it wouldn’t be the first punk band we have featured. In fact, it wouldn’t be the first non-metal album review that the Klown has done! So without further ado, these Irishmen from the infamous Quincey neighborhood of Boston have returned and have bestowed on us 11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory. The Klown had no idea it was coming out and he was stoked when he found it. Although this album is not The Warrior’s Code nor Signed and Sealed in Blood, it’s still good and revisits more of the Oi scene at times especially with “Until The Next Time” and was an overall great traditional Celtic punk rock album. For a lot of us, the tracks “Blood,” “Sandlot,” “First Class Loser” and “Paying My Way” hit home and is a soundtrack for the youngins that are aging and present… like yours truly! It’s a fun album to get your hands on and, for the cynics in all of us, a reminder of what the mood of 2017 might be after inauguration day.

Sisters Of Suffocation Will Haunt Your Dreams

This Dutch all-female death metal band released their unnerving but artistic music video for their single “Phobophobia.” Not familiar with them? It’s cool, I wasn’t either and man did I hit the jack pot with these ladies! Though this quartet has only been around since 2014, they’ve been making waves in European festivals and venues. If you’re expecting a cutesy shriek from the cherub faced Els Prins, man, are you in for a surprise. See for yourself and prepare to be amazed! Rest assured they will take 2017 by storm when they’ll release their debut album! SLAY KWEENS!

Metal Blade Records Will Celebrate The Big 3-5…

It’s hard to believe the iconic label will ring in their 35th birthday *sniff* they grow up too fast and their celebration won’t be some super adult party…whatever that is. The label will celebrate their anniversary with the help of Whitechapel, Goatwhore, Allegaeon and hometown heroes Cattle Decapitation. The tour kicks off February 21 and luckily for us, we don’t have to put ourselves in painfully awkward situations to prove our coolness and worthiness of that invite…yet, ‘cause we can buy our way in! Invitations to this metal party are available now right here, see ya there losers! 😉

So are we still pitching in for the gift or what?!

More Tour News!

2017 seems to be jump starting our hopes with another interesting tour. Anthrax, Killswitch Engage and Devil Wears Prada will be trekking the U.S starting March 29, regardless of how you feel about the other two bands, keep in mind there’s a little know band known as ANTHRAX in the midst! Though there is no San Diego date (what a shocker *rolls eyes*) there are still plenty of tickets to other locations right hurrrrr.

THIS IS AN ‘ACTUAL EVENT

Because 2016 has been a pretty shitastic year for some, cyber revolutionary and OG cool kid Trent Reznor threw us a bone by announcing a Nine Inch Nails EP titles Not The Actual Events. Reznor along with his creative partner in crime, composer Atticus Ross (who is now an official member of NIN), will release the EP on Dec.23 for digital download and can be preordered for vinyl and physical copies in the NIN store.

“It’s an unfriendly, fairly impenetrable record that we needed to make,” said Reznor in a press release. “It’s an EP because that ended up being the proper length to tell that story.”

If Not The Actual Events is as unsettling and unfriendly as Reznor and Ross promise, not only will it be suitable and become the designated soundtrack to the chaotic times we’re living in, but it might also shush our insufferable whining about new NIN material.   Pre-order now!

Those lucky sons of guns will have everyone’s favorite German Industrial pyros for their ONLY East Coast date. Rammstein will treat the Big Apple to their notorious and OUTSTANDING live performances at the Jones Beach Theater on June 25. *Sniff* Though Ugh Metal’s invite got lost somewhere in the mail along with our matching g-string bikinis, we will still have to keep hope alive or just enjoy the memories from the previous Rammstein shows we’ve experienced. So to our East Coast(ians?), get on it!

Kreator Makes Us Believe With Latest Video

These thrashers unleashed their second single and video “Satan Is Real,” and after indulging in this wicked story it only makes me more impatient. “Satan Is Real” tells a story as old as time you know, two innocent angel-faced girls frolicking in the countryside doing innocent countryside things till… well see for yourself, which I’m sure you will press that replay button afterwards.
