Ugh Metal Celebrates Metal Blade Records’ 35th Birthday

Whitechapel singing a metal Happy Birthday in this shindig… not really.
(L to R: Guitarist Zach Householder, drummer Ben Harclerode , bassist Gabe Crisp, vocalist Phil Bozeman and guitarist Alex Wade)

In 1982, the Klown was Pennywise’s preconceived thought, Stephen King was probably still brainstorming to work on the Klown’s bible, Ronald Reagan’s administration was in place. Most importantly, a records store employee by the name of Brian Slagel was putting out sample cassettes helping local LA metal acts to make a name for themselves among them was Metallica. On March 9, Ugh Metal took a trip to downtown San Diego and in to the House of Blues to commemorate Slagel’s brainchild and celebrate his baby’s 35th anniversary.

In an Ugh Metal second, the Klown would like to extend another mea culpa to the opener of this birthday bash, Necromancing The Stone. For reasons that are best left unsaid, the Klown and company just had a doozy of a time getting there on time. T’was a real shame, the Klown was looking forward on seeing these gents kick ass. Possibly partake in a bit of “Bleed for the Night,” “Unfinished Business” or “The Battle of Morningstar.” Till next time gents, hopefully y’all will return to our humble abode so Ugh Metal could partake.

Ugh Metal’s night kicked off with the Coloradoan quintet known as Allegaeon. The group kicked us off with the energetic sounding, “Proponents for Sentience I – The Conception.” Frontman Riley McShane proved to be charismatic and upbeat to keep the crowd going. Right before the performance “Of Mind and Matrix,” McShane got a louder pop from the crowd when he announced that he too was a local boy, from Escondido to be exact.

Allegaeon start off Ugh Metals night…sowwy Necromancing the Stone   (L to R: Bassist Cory Archuleta, drummer Brandon Park, vocalist Riley McShane, guitarist Corey Stancel and guitarist Greg Burgess )

Before closing out Allegaeon’s set, McShane announced his appreciation for the support and for the opportunity Metal Blade Records gave them and then wished their label a happy birthday. The group closed out with the somewhat energetic “1.618,” a song which defines the band’s sound and musical style. Due to their signature style best heard in this song, it helped them gain recognition from the label.

After Allegaeon’s technical and melodic metal cleared the stage, the Klown had the pleasure of seeing the definition of extreme metal from NOLA. If you keep up with us, then it should be no surprise if you don’t, you can check out how the Big Easy came to the Finest City. Unlike last time, Goatwhore’s setlist was shorter than the last time but that was to be expected. Just like before, frontman L. Benjamin Falgoust II and the prolific guitarist and backing vocalist, Sammy Duet, put on one of the best shows the Klown has ever seen.

These gents from N’Orleans’ started their time with “An End to Nothing.” After “Collapse in Eternal Worth,” Falgoust hyped the crowd and showed some contagious charisma and joked about those who were checking them out for the first time and who haven’t bought their last album by simply saying to “get them at the merch stand or just download them illegally like everyone else!”

GOATWHORE!
(L to R: guitarist Sammy Duet, vocalist L. Benjamin Falgoust II, bassist James Harvey)

Goatwhore soothed the clamoring masses when they began to perform “Cold Earth Consumed in Dying Flesh.” Of course, a Goatwhore show would feel rather incomplete without their timeless classic, “FBS.” Right before Falgoust started “In Deathless Tradition,” he continued to hype and announced the band’s newest album and its approximate release, Falgoust however, iterated that they would not perform any of the new material. Goatwhore proved that their presence is as powerful as a voodoo spell this time around, managing to blow the roof off of the House of Blues and closed with “Apocalyptic Havoc.”

After Goatwhore left the crowd, the audience that night got more refreshed when local titans Cattle Decapitation took the stage. Cattle Decap kicked off with one of the Klown’s personal favorite “Manufactured Extinct” and followed with “Prophets of the Lost.” As always, it’s rather refreshing to see front man Travis Ryan be himself on stage. If you don’t understand what the Klown means, allow him to elaborate. If you’ve never seen a Cattle Decap show, Ryan unlike other front men, isn’t the “average” type of front man. Even as Ryan works the crowd, he manages to incorporate humor and every once in a while uses his signature high vocals to speak.

Hometown heroes/badasses Cattle Decapitation put on a hell of a show!
(L to R: Guitarist Josh Elmore, drummer Dave McGraw, bassist Derek Engemann, vocalist Travis Ryan and guitarist Belisario Dimuzio)

Cattle Decap also played the current theme song of the world: “We Are Horrible People.” Ryan would share their appreciation for Metal Blade, the fans and the opportunity to represent the label for 15 years and counting. Before closing out, Ryan would go on to show some California pride proclaiming it the best state in the country because of the weather and food among other things on his list, and dedicated “Pacific Grim” to the Golden State and its inhabitants.

The heavy metal dose of California love continued with Whitechapel. Time is a hell of thing, the last time the Klown saw Whitechapel was five years ago at the same venue co-headlining with Hatebreed. The boys from Whitechapel put on a hell of a show then and delivered again this time. They began their performance with “The Saw Is the Law,” a song the Klown believes was rather appropriate not only representing this type of metal blade and their symbol.

Unlike the last time, the band as a whole had a nearly invincible presence about them. Phil Bozeman’s showmanship was infectious and was a man of few words except when he had to growl. The band then took us back to their self titled 2012 album by performing “Faces” and “I, Dementia.” The band would have felt remised to leave out their latest album Mark of the Blade and performed “Mark of the Blade” and “Elitist Ones.” The masses bellowed in joy after “Possibilities of an Impossible Existence,” and the band generously treated fans to one more song.

Phil Bozeman, Ben Savage and Zach Householder hack us good!

Whitechapel finished their set with an encore performance of “This Is Exile” from their first breakthrough album, This Is Exile. This truly was an awesome birthday that Ugh Metal had a chance to attend. Assuming Metal Blade decides to throw another birthday bash, don’t forget to RSVP for the next time because you definitely don’t want to miss out.

Sisters Of Suffocation Will Haunt Your Dreams

This Dutch all-female death metal band released their unnerving but artistic music video for their single “Phobophobia.” Not familiar with them? It’s cool, I wasn’t either and man did I hit the jack pot with these ladies! Though this quartet has only been around since 2014, they’ve been making waves in European festivals and venues. If you’re expecting a cutesy shriek from the cherub faced Els Prins, man, are you in for a surprise. See for yourself and prepare to be amazed! Rest assured they will take 2017 by storm when they’ll release their debut album! SLAY KWEENS!

Metal Blade Records Will Celebrate The Big 3-5…

It’s hard to believe the iconic label will ring in their 35th birthday *sniff* they grow up too fast and their celebration won’t be some super adult party…whatever that is. The label will celebrate their anniversary with the help of Whitechapel, Goatwhore, Allegaeon and hometown heroes Cattle Decapitation. The tour kicks off February 21 and luckily for us, we don’t have to put ourselves in painfully awkward situations to prove our coolness and worthiness of that invite…yet, ‘cause we can buy our way in! Invitations to this metal party are available now right here, see ya there losers! 😉

So are we still pitching in for the gift or what?!

THIS IS AN ‘ACTUAL EVENT

Because 2016 has been a pretty shitastic year for some, cyber revolutionary and OG cool kid Trent Reznor threw us a bone by announcing a Nine Inch Nails EP titles Not The Actual Events. Reznor along with his creative partner in crime, composer Atticus Ross (who is now an official member of NIN), will release the EP on Dec.23 for digital download and can be preordered for vinyl and physical copies in the NIN store.

“It’s an unfriendly, fairly impenetrable record that we needed to make,” said Reznor in a press release. “It’s an EP because that ended up being the proper length to tell that story.”

If Not The Actual Events is as unsettling and unfriendly as Reznor and Ross promise, not only will it be suitable and become the designated soundtrack to the chaotic times we’re living in, but it might also shush our insufferable whining about new NIN material.   Pre-order now!

Rammstein will treat the Big Apple to their notorious and OUTSTANDING live performances at the Jones Beach Theater on June 25. *Sniff* Though Ugh Metal’s invite got lost somewhere in the mail along with our matching g-string bikinis, we will still have to keep hope alive or just enjoy the memories from the previous Rammstein shows we’ve experienced. So to our East Coast(ians?), get on it!

Kreator Makes Us Believe With Latest Video

These thrashers unleashed their second single and video “Satan Is Real,” and after indulging in this wicked story it only makes me more impatient. “Satan Is Real” tells a story as old as time you know, two innocent angel-faced girls frolicking in the countryside doing innocent countryside things till… well see for yourself, which I’m sure you will press that replay button afterwards.

Couple Stays Kvlt In Engagement Photos

A California couple wandered in to the Carpathian Forest Holy Jim Canyon to capture the beginning of their happily ever after, till things got a little metal. The soon to be husband and wife, John Awesome and Nydia Hernandez, were shooting their engagement photos till they bumped in to local black metal band Coldvoid. According to Awesome (yes, that’s his real last name) the band graciously accepted to be part of their romantic photo shoot which was captured by photographer Janet Wheeland. No word if they’ll be performing at their wedding yet or if we’ll get the exclusive. Here’s to trve love! And check out Coldvoid on the link below ‘cause their stuff is pretty cool.

Whitechapel Hits ‘Home’ With Latest Music Video

Phil Bozeman ditches his signature ferocity and bares his soul in “Bring Me Home.” The pivotal theme is grief and all the ugliness it comes with after losing a loved one. Bozeman gets painfully real and will strike you to the core not just because of the intimate imagery but also because of his impressive and clean vocals. And I have something in my eyes and it’s allergy season too okay!… *Sniff, sniff*

Korn Gets Real In New Video

These Nu Metal vets sound like their old self in “Take Me.” The bleakness and anguish of the song along with the music video reminds us why Korn was good in the olden days.

No One ‘Will Remain’ After Holy Grail’s New Video

No one is safe from the quintet’s murderous merch man in the video for “No One Will Remain.” The low budget music video would throw some off in the beginning if it wasn’t for the disclaimer right before the video plays. “No One Will Remain” creeps in just time for Halloween and is pretty NSFW because it you know murder, fake blood, and the murderous merch man’s mustache (try saying that 3 times). You will get a cheap laugh or two and yes, I am going to hell for that and I will see you there after you’re done watching it and agree with me.

On Trial: Whitechapel With Special Commentary,Chelsea Grin and many more.. YAY!

A Note From the Klown: Assuming you’re all still with us, you have all been good sports. Y’know how it is with us Klowns and adulting, once a holiday hits you are practically counting down the hours till you can go on with your bad self! In an act of independence of my own, the trials from before weren’t submitted. So to cap off this sorry attempt of an excuse, here are all the trials that weren’t submitted AND up-to-date release!

The June 24h Trials

Bel’Akor fourth came

For those not aware of Bel’Akor, this quintet from Down Under will sure get your melodic death metal’s rocks off. Their current and fourth album, Vessels, adds a nice little twist to their current collection. Although their previous album, Of Breath and Bone, has been met with mixed reviews, it is considered one of their best album and a breakthrough. So with that said Vessels is not, at all, a bad follow up. Vessels keep you intrigued with an array of sounds. Their tracks, “Roots to Sever” and “Ember’s Arc” will have you reminisce of Amon Amarth. This album is not heavy but rather nice. Almost feels like a more melodic and softer Revolution DNA Sceptic Flesh. Although not the best album, it is definitely enjoyable. As I said before, not a bad follow up.

The Browning stays fresh with latest

When I first heard The Browning’s Isolation, I had no idea what to expect. Last album, Hypernova, was kind of a disappointment because not only did it feel rushed but it was as if they had forgotten that they were a metal band and not DJs. This new album provides a more aggressive blend of EDM and Metal. The track “Pure Evil” being proof of that, as well as justifying its status as the band’s hit single. Just to close out this album’s review if electronic music of isn’t your thing, this album is definitely not something I would recommend. Otherwise this album is definitely a nice comeback for these boys from Kansas City.

The July 1st Trial

Chelsea Grin will have you grinning with the latest.

Self Inflicted is the latest and fourth installment from Chelsea Grin. The boys from Salt Lake City proved that change and rest is something that can prove vital to an album’s production. Their track “Click Bait” will leave you impressed and baited enough to keep you hooked. Despite this album being an overall satisfying album, it felt like an unnecessary part two to their previous  album Ashes to Ashes. Still, this album is worth the listen.

Wolf Hoffmann’s second Symphony

Close to 20 years from his Classical album’s debut, Accept’s guitarist Wolf Hoffmann returns with a neoclassical metal compilation titled Headbangers Symphony. This album is kind of self explanatory as far as content goes. For those who haven’t caught on, however, Wolf pulls an Yngwie Malmsteen and shredding to classical compositions. Wolf kicks off with Ludwig von Beethoven’s “Sherzo” and continues on with a medley of composers such as Vivaldi, Mussorgky, Mozart and Tchaikovsky. This album introduces the true classics and “culture” without having to compromise your tastes in metal. If you’ve never have been exposed to symphonies or Yngwie Malmsteen, this is definitely an album to consider.

Inter Arma’s third has the stuff for Paradise

Inter Arma’s third album Paradise Gallows, has officially come out and has been turning heads. The current single “The Summer Drones,” is definitely a strong enough track to convince you to listen to this current installation. Especially true if you are a fan of Mastodon and sludge. Mike Papparo’s vocals will entrance you as he ranges his own and make them similar to that of Neil Fallon’s vocals mixed with that of Tony “Demolition Man” Dolan vocals and growl. This is definitely a breakthrough album but not enough to be perfect but Inter Arma will have us keeping an eye out for their next album.

Spellcaster can’t Hide current album from us

Spellcaster has unleashed Night Hides the World that will cast a time spell and take you back in to the time when Helloween and Blind Guardian reigned supreme. Even the track “Nite of the Hellbeast” is a testament of that kind of that throwback. Nostalgia prevails with these it needs some more seasoning or something little more fresh. Yes, it’s power metal but just like any good story that gets told, it can get a little repetitive. Despite that, if you are a fan of Holy Grail and Blind Guardian, it’s definitely an album worth considering.

July 15th trial

Blood Red Throne definitely will unite our Flesh and Machine with latest

The Norwegian quintet have returned more brutal than ever. With a new album and remind you that Norwegians aren’t just strictly a black metal nation. Their latest album, Union of Flesh and Machine, has pure adrenaline and rhythm coursing through its veins. Hearing this album reminds me a bit of French death metal band, Kronos and their second to last album The Hellenic Terror or All Shall Perish’s Hate.Malice.Revenge fused with a bit of The Price of Existence. A crowned jewel on this album is the death metal cover on Judas Priest’s “Leather Rebel”.

*Chuggo and Jenny Discuss Whitechapel’s Mark of the Blade Over their Afternoon Teas*

Chuggo: So…. I personally enjoyed this album… like A LOT! It’s basically the story of my life. Y’know the one about my former male stripping career?

Jenny: Ah yes, this album is just wow… it left me just as speechless as the time when you said you sold your prized keg!… But only traded it in for a shinier, younger one. So never mind, this album’s wow factor definitely outlasted that.

Chuggo: So… this album has a good start with “The Void”. Feel like it’s Whitechapel’s way of reminding you that they’re back!

Jenny: Talk about starting with a BANG! And no Chuggo, not talking about your pet squirrel… since you gave me that mother bear look.

Chuggo: Once you get to the “Elistist Ones” …great track, it’s aggression and adrenaline does not go to waste whatsoever!

Jenny: YASSSSSSS!! I gotta say that has to be my favorite song from the album along with “A Killing Industry.” Those two songs are amazing especially when you’re repenting on the treadmill burning off all those taquitos, mimosas and bad decisions!

Chuggo: “Bring Me Home” pleasant fucking surprise that one ended up being… my hat is off to you, Phil. Phil Bozeman can sing and it feels like he can serenade succubae back to the deed with that voice of his. Wish this song was going on during my pole dancing routine.

Jenny: Damn you Bozeman for making me feel… feelings! *GAGS*

Chuggo: “Tremors” was great follow up to “Bring Me Home”, starting slow and building up for a fast track.

Jenny: It was definitely the deliciously brutal storm after the calm… or however that saying goes…

Chuggo: Still felt like “Tormented” was a melodic Meshuggah track. Had that signature, Dick Lövgren bass drop combined with some melodic metal sounds. Good track. “Dicennium”… Jesus, going back to “Bring Me Home”, Phil Bozeman… my hat’s off to you, sir. Great closing track for this album.

Jenny: Yeah, you know it’s always a fascinating to see how a band reinvents itself and it can either be a hit or miss, but well played Whitechapel.

Chuggo: It was all over the place but in a good way. We got to see Whitechapel represent metal the way it is rarely perceived.

Jenny: Ok now settle down there Chuggo, I know you really liked the album but for the last time, Phil Bozeman will not be reading this let alone invite you back on tour after the last time. But great album!

We the people decide: 6 out of 6, This is legendary it will melt your face off!!
